Oddities in my garden

I was pulling weeds from around my poor, beleaguered tomato plant 
this morning and found this:
A prickly pear?


A mutant vegetable?


An iPod?


I don't know, but I love how you never know what you'll find when you're making room for new growth.




Right afterward, I spotted this interesting guy on my gate post:

What great colors he's got! Looks like the bark on a live oak too...

Yes--great observation, Winter! And his head is the same color as the orange zinnia. Any idea what that green pod thing might be?

That's a golden fronted woodpecker. I've never seen one here. Nice.
